I had the absolute strangest meal today! so much so i am beginning to think Michelin Stars are overrated.
Anyways was supposec to go with BFF2 to Maze but according to A, our lines got crossed so he ended up booking Maze for TODAY. When i meant next week. Our conversation yesterday went something like:
A : Oh so i thought you had classes at 6pm? (Reservations were at 7pm)
Me : Oh classes are over for the year. What's happening tomorrow?
To which we both realised he booked the wrong date!! Yea, BFF2 had too much work this week and with two dissertations due, so was i. However, feeling pretty proud of myself i decided to 'reward' myself for all my 'hard' work. Well waking up at 7.30 IS HARD WORK ALRIGHT. Besides the chef was supposed to be some up and coming dude with a Michelin star within a year plus one of the only English chefs to have completed a term at El Bulli. Apparently his speciality is deconstructing food.
BAD IDEA.
The only good thing i remember about the meal was the starters and the desserts.
Bread : It was warm and with the salted butter...It melted in my mouth. Yummy!!
Starters : Awesome pumpkin soup with duck topped with truffle oil and brioche with cep spread. Brioche was a bit tasteless but the pumpkin soup was lovely. Silky, tastes of sweet pumpkin and the duck was braised just right.
and then we waited....
and waited....
Half an hour later
2d startes : Beetroot with pine nuts some sweet fruit and feta cheese? Just a terrible combination. Beetroot sadwiched the cheese. Way too strong and i don't like cheese that tastes like armpit. There were three of those sandwiches. A and i only ate one. o.O
And we waited
and waited.
and waited
Half an hour later!!
3rd Starters : BLT!! Some lettuce sauce with tomato, with fried onions andn bacon. Lovely. Served in a martini cup. Traditional deconstructed food. Pretty good!! tastes exactly like BLT in a martini cup.
A's starters was much better. Poached egg with risotto and quail. Personally i love quail so it can't really be screwed up.
And we waited
and waited
and waited
By this time we were waiting for an hour half a half.
After an hour and a half we only had THREE DISHES.
Fish : Scallops with red mullet with boullabaise sauce. Scallops over cooked and a bit tough and the mullet was over salted and fishy. Anyways i was appalled. The white wine the sommelier suggested to go with the fish was terrible. I mean it taste fine by itself. Very strong flavours but with the fish, it had a horrible aftertaste of tinfoil. Metallic..terrible. If only i could remember what that wine was called. Oh well....
Mains : OH the tour-de-force. Brace yourselves..I had pigeon with chocolate sauce parsley and some garlic foam thing. Chocolate sauce had an initial plummy taste with choco aftertaste. It just didn't work well with parsley. Parsley was way too strong a herb. Flavours wayy over my head. I guess my palate just isn't that sophisticated. Ok i'm joking, when something tastes nice it tastes nice. Rule of thumb.
The best mains was A's side of shepard's pie. The potatoes were silky and the lamb tasted just right. No peas or anything in it.
Dessert : Probably the highlight of the night. We had chocolate ganache, panna cotta with olive dressing and some frozen fruity thing. Balance of flavours just awesome. Panna cotta was citrusy with that tang and just salty from the black olive infusion.
Chocolate ganache was perfectly balanced out with the sea salt, pistachio and the ice cream.
Petit fours : It was splendid. I forgot what it was but i recall chocolate, pineapple lollipop with meringue. Inside the meringue was vanilla ice cream.
There was also turkish delight and praline dark chocolate.
All in all, the service was alright but it could have been better. I felt the staff didn't know their stuff and the sommelier..totally ruined my already terrible fish!! =(
Usually wine cheers me up =)
